Helena Bártolo is Coordinator Professor of Sustainable Construction at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (PIL). She holds a PhD in Construction Management from the University of Reading (UK), a Master of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of Porto and an undergraduate degree (5 years) in Civil Engineering from the University of Coimbra. She was Director of the School of Technology at the Polytechnic of Cavado and Ave at Barcelos. She was a member of the Scientific Committee of the advanced program in Computing applied to Architecture, Urban Planning and Design (2013 -2015) from the Faculy of Architecture, University of Lisbon ((FA/ULisbon). Since 2010, she has been vice-president of the Master Juries in Engineering Economics for Construction from the “École Superieure D’Economie et Techniques de Construction” at Paris, France. Helena Bártolo is a member of the Research Centre for Architecture, Urban Planning and Design (CIAUD) from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon (FA/ULisbon).  Since its launching in 2018, she was founder and scientific member of the Research Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (PIL), rated as Excellent by an International research assessment committee. Helena Bártolo was Conference Chair and Co-Chair of International Conferences, having also organized other international and national events, such as symposiums, workshops and seminars. She was supervisor and co-supervisor of master, doctoral and post-doc students, and participated in 10 research projects funded by the European Commission, the Portuguese Agency for Innovation, the British Council, the Portuguese Institute for Entrepreneurship and SME, and the Industry. She has collaborated in the assessment of research projects funded by the South Africa Science Foundation, and has been invited to the peer reviewing of scientific articles submitted to International Journals, such as Energy and Buildings, Construction Management & Engineering and Virtual and Physical Prototyping. She has participated in international research networks, such as Collaborative Working Environments (European Commission), European sustainable energy innovation alliance (eseia), CNBR (International Co-operative Network for Building Researchers), ARCOM (Association of Researchers for Construction Management), INTBAU (International Network for traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism), DRS (Design Research Society) e AKPIA (Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture). Her research interest lie primarily in the fields of the sustainable construction, the bio-inspired computational techniques to assist in the conceptual design phases, the sustainable and smart materials for construction, and the advanced processes for additive fabrication. She is author and co-author of more than 60 articles published in book chapters, journals and scientific conferences.

Membro da Comissão Cientifica do Curso de Estudos Avançados em Computação aplicada à Arquitectura, Urbanismo e Construção da Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa (2013 -2015).

Participou em 10 projetos de investigação financiados pela Comissão Europeia, Agência de Inovação, British Council, IAPMEI e indústria, tendo sido a coordenadora do IPL nos projetos europeus INFINITY (International Fellowship IN transdisciplinarITY) e RETHINK (Reform of Education THru International Knowledge Exchange.
