CIAUD and the Lisbon School of Architecture of the University of Lisbon announce, with deep sorrow, the passing of Professor Rachel Cooper on July 17, 2025. Rachel Cooper was part of the CIAUD's group of design consultants and collaborated with the Lisbon School of Architecture whenever requested, with total and generous dedication.

Rachel Cooper was Professor Emeritus of Design Management and Policy at Lancaster University and Founding Director of Imagination Lancaster, beyond being editor of the Routledge Design for Social Responsibility series, founding editor of The Design Journal, founding president of the European Academy of Design, and president of the Design Research Society. In 2013, Rachel was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, for services to education.

With her death, Design area is poorer! She left us her writings, her reflections, countless interviews, and recordings of her interventions in conferences and lecture presentations.
